Supporting Boys Through a Tough Stage

Teen boys often struggle in silence or act things out instead. Changes in mood, behaviour, motivation, or school engagement are common during this stage.

Many boys don’t have the words to explain what’s going on, and pressure can show up as anger, withdrawal, or risk-taking. Parents are often left worried and unsure how to help.

Support can help boys feel understood and give families clearer ways to navigate this challenging period.

Common signs:

Withdrawal
Anger
School refusal or drop in effort
Excessive gaming
Risk-taking
Difficulty expressing emotions

Support early, change the trajectory.

We begin by understanding what’s going on beneath the behaviour. Teen boys often struggle to explain how they’re feeling, and distress can show up as anger, withdrawal, shutdown, or acting out. Taking the time to understand their world helps build trust and safety.

From there, we work on helping boys develop ways to cope with pressure, emotions, and change. This can include building communication skills, emotional awareness, and confidence, while also supporting parents to respond in ways that reduce conflict and stress at home.
